Traditional IRA

Tax-deferred growth

Must have taxable wages from earned income to contribute. Specific income limits apply to be tax deductible. **

  • Earnings grow tax-deferred
  • Contributions are generally made with pre-tax dollars.
  • Contributions are tax-deductible.
  • You pay taxes on your contributions and any earnings when you withdraw from your IRA.
  • Before age 59 ½, you may incur early withdrawal fees**
  • Generally, you are required to take out a minimum amount of money (RMD) stating at age 73.

Roth IRA

Tax-free growth

Must have taxable wages from earned income with specific IRS income limits. **

  • Earnings grow tax-free
  • Contributions made with after-tax dollars
  • Contributions are not tax-deductible Contributions may be withdrawn at any time for any reason.
  • Withdraw of earnings are tax-free and penalty-free if you meet IRS qualified distribution requirements**
  • Withdrawals before age 59 ½ may incur early withdrawal fees**
  • Required minimum distributions are not required.
